Weekend afternoon TEA DANCES were all the rage in the 1960s in Hong Kong and on August 14th and 21st, veteran Hong Kong singer/actor/DJ Anders Nelsson will help Hong Kongers relive those days with three solid hours of classic retro hits as he takes to the turntables at the Manchester United Restaurant Bar in Lock Road, Tsim Sha Tsui.
“Woodstock took place from August 15th to 18th in 1969 and Elvis died on August 16th, 1977, so August 14th to 21st is an historic fortnight,” says the Swede who has lived in Hong Kong since 1950 and calls Hong Kong his home.
Nelsson started his professional career with his band The Kontinentals playing tea dances at The Bayside Nightclub in the then brand-new Chungking Mansions, which is celebrating it’s 50th anniversary this autumn.
“The Manchester United club is just around the corner from where the Bayside was,” says Nelsson.

The sessions will be from 3 pm to 6 pm on each day and apart from playing the classics pop and rock hits of the day, Nelsson will have a dance instructor on hand to teach the younger generation how to TWIST and do the Cha Cha Cha and Mashed Potatos, with prizes for the best dancers.

“We’re going to relive the Summer of Love,” says Nelsson, “and the younger generations can come and see what it was all about”.
